Wallonia Picardy is a vast green and accessible plain, with a population of 330,000, at the doors of Lille, Brussels, Mons and Courtrai. It consists of 23 communes, 2 nature reserves and 3 heritage-packed and commercial towns or cities, Tournai, Ath and Mouscron. It offers its inhabitants and its passing visitors huge spaces of open-air entertainment, kilometres of walks in a preserved and natural environment and many festive and convivial appointments.
Heritage lovers will be delighted. Tournai, city of the five bell-towers, has a rich historical heart, its Notre-Dame cathedral and its belfry are classified as UNESCO world heritage, and the Fine Arts Museum, in a Horta building, houses an important collection of impressionist art. But there’s more: Ath, its mediaeval tower known as “Burbant” and the house of the giants, in reference to his famous Fair, itself classified as UNESCO world heritage; Lessines and the Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose, major heritage of Wallonia. Beloeil, its park and its castle; Enghien and its park also recognized as an exceptional garden. Two hours of visits and strolls in prospect!
Children and families are not forgotten. The recreation possibilities are divided between indoor playgrounds in the winter and outdoor attractions and walks in the summer. Pairi Daiza, true garden of the worlds where thousands of animals rub shoulders with each other, will welcome you for a worthwhile day. The archaeological sites will take you back to Roman times. Finally, the Wap Adventure games books and the Rando Famili walks promise you playful and instructive moments of relaxation throughout our region.
Hikers are spoilt! With its two nature reserves, in the Land of the Hills and on the Plains of the Scheldt, there are many paths for walking. On foot, by bike, on horseback or in an ATV, through the pastoral and undulating landscapes or on the vast wet and shaded plains, both the sports-minded and the lovers of peace and quiet and the great outdoors will be in their element!
Epicureans will be in their element. Good restaurants and local producers are abundant in Wallonia Picardy and they are inexhaustible when it is a question of extolling their produce. The cottage-industry beers, brewed by the 14 micro-breweries of the territory, are for their part inescapable! There are more than a hundred of them, to be savoured with moderation!
Lastly, lovers of folklore and festivities will find plenty to enjoy. Wallonia Picardy is indeed a land on the move and the associative and cultural sectors are numerous and chime with the seasons. Between the old traditions borne in particular by the museums of rural life, the tradition of the giants, the circus and music festivals, classical concert performances or the botanical fairs in the gardens, there’s no shortage of things to do.
